Cancer is perhaps the most lethal effect of excess smoking. Tobacco, that is being smoked, has carcinogen which changes the genetic materials in the cell. This leads to mutation of cells into malignant tumor. Smokers are also at risk ten times of laryngeal cancer as compared to non-smokers. The more quantity of cigarette being smoked means higher risk of developing this kind of disease. Beyond this serious disease, smokers are likely to develop heart disease and diabetes. In addition, smoking cigarette changes those factors which are necessary in the maintenance of good oral health and leads to oral problems. The teeth of a person are protected by the antibodies found in the saliva. The latter is responsible for rinsing and bathing the surfaces of our denture. But, this act of the saliva is significantly diminished by smoking which leaves the gums and teeth vulnerable to many infections.

The nicotine found on cigars is vasoconstrictor which decreases the blood supply in the tissues of our mouth. The tissues will then become very malnourished and will no longer be able to support the teeth causing the latter to fall out. One cosmetic effect of smoking is the discoloration of the teeth. This is because the pits and grooves of the teeth are become stained of the tar deposits.
