Men’s Grooming Do’s and Don’ts

Putting together a men’s grooming routine shouldn’t be complicated. When it comes to men’s grooming, there are certain things you should always do – and certain things you shouldn’t. We’ve developed a list of the top do’s and don’ts to help you get more out of your men’s grooming routine. Here it is:

Do:

Use a men’s anti-aging cream. Wrinkles and fine lines can make you look older – nobody wants that. Apply a men’s anti aging cream to your face before applying a men’s moisturizer. Use it twice a day (morning and evening) for the best results.

Don’t:

Use too much. Applying too much of an anti-aging cream can leave your face looking greasy and shiny. The same goes for any type of moisturizing product, such as a men’s face lotion or a men’s body lotion. Use only the amount specified on the label. Want more anti-aging tips? Do:

Use a face scrub for men. Exfoliation is a crucial component of any men’s skincare routine. By removing dead skin cells and dull buildup, a men’s face scrub helps you renew your complexion to put your best face forward. Don’t:

Use a men’s face scrub more than 3-4 times a week. Because of its deep-cleaning properties, a men’s face scrub should not be used every day – overuse may cause irritation. Also, if you have sensitive skin, reduce the amount, frequency, and time of application of product until your skin becomes accustomed to regular exfoliation.

Do:

Use a men’s moisturizer. Weather conditions, genetics and other factors can cause dry skin, but a men’s moisturizer can help ward it off. For the best results, you should always apply moisturizer immediately after showering. This is when your pores are at their most absorbent. Read “Common Men’s Skin Conditions” for more information on dry skin and other skin issues.

Don’t:

Use a men’s face moisturizer on your body and vice versa. The skin on your face is much more sensitive than that on the rest of your body, so it needs its own dedicated product. By using separate products for your face and body, you’ll get better results.

Do:

Use a men’s after-shave product. After you shave, your skin is extremely sensitive. To help soothe that irritation, an after-shave product for men is necessary. Look for one with salicylic acid to help prevent and control ingrown hairs.

Don’t:

Shave without the proper men’s shaving cream. For a closer shave, look for a formula based on natural ingredients like glycerin and aloe – these are gentler on the skin and allow for multiple passes before reapplication.

Do:

Apply sunblock if you plan on being outside in the sun for an extended period of time. Sun exposure can age your skin, resulting in wrinkles and fine lines (not to mention, skin cancer). Opt for an SPF 30 sunblock and use 20 minutes before heading outside for maximum protection.

Don’t:

Just apply sunblock to your face. You should apply it to any exposed areas even if you’re not at the beach. Locations such as neck and forearms are prime targets for sun exposure, so make sure to apply the appropriate amount before heading out. Read “Protect Your Skin from Sun Damage” for more suncare tips.
