What to Look For in a Men’s Sunblock

Here at MenScience, we can’t stress enough the important of proper sun care. When you’re outside this summer, you need these two suncare basics: sunblock and lip balm. Both products provide the best protection against sun damage like wrinkles and dry skin. In the June 2011 issue of Men’s Health, Deborah Sarnoff — clinical professor of dermatology at New York University — listed the ingredients and benefits that you should look for in an effective sunscreen. Ask yourself these questions before purchasing your next men’s sunblock:

Does it protect against UVA/UVB rays? Both types can do a number on your skin, and many sunblocks only protect against one type. A broad-spectrum sunscreen offers adequate protection against both.

Does it contain titanium dioxide? This ingredient  complements other sunscreen ingredients for maximum sun blockage. Unlike chemical sunscreens that penetrate and directly react with the skin, titanium dioxide provides a physical layer of protection, causing harmful rays to be deflected or absorbed.

– Is it at least SPF 30? Anything lower than SPF 30 may not offer enough protection. SPF 30 is the magic number — anything more than that is unlikely to offer much of a difference in terms of UV ray protection.
